What others are saying
"Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs: A tribute To Elvis,
Doo-Wop and Beach Music: Bradley House Records: BMR1707: (June 2004):
A more appropriate title could not have been given to this twenty-track
collection produced and performed by one of the original icons of R n B
and Soul. Containing multiple covers and original music this project
literally has something for everyone. You will find old school melodies
and harmonies: Funky sophisticated rhythms, classic doo-wop harmonies
and blends that revive memories of days gone by and pique our
imagination toward the future are found throughout. Finally, I
personally would like to complement Maurice for his allowing Fred Mangum
(a member of the Zodiacs) to take the lead on two tracks. I’ve seen Fred
in performance with Maurice and his talented vocalizations complement
the seasoned resonance of Maurice. But on this
project he stands forth like a rising star on a clear spring morning.
As to my personal favorites that is a real problem since I personally
enjoy the old school flavor but here goes. Track eight (I Remember)
written and performed by Maurice is a smooth old school flavored dance
track with a solid sax back line along with straight doo-wop
backgrounds. All under the flowing words and delivery of brother
Maurice. Track ten offers us a solid cover by Fred Mangum of the
Stylistics classic “You Are Everything”. Simple harmonies with a strong
acoustic guitar bridge by Ronnie Waters’s makes this revived belly
rubber one that will receive attention. On Track eleven (Rock and Roll
Baby) Fred just simply rocks. The track has a solid beat. A true Rock n
Roll piano paired with a pumpin’ sax backed by rock solid Holiday Sister
harmonies gives this one all the energy a dance tune should have.
Finally, Maurice provides us with a classic beach tune in another self
penned and performed track entitled “Forever Beach”. This one echo’s the
sounds of yesterday and the promise of tomorrow in its words,
arrangement and overall presentation." Article by Mikey
